Yes, roof mounted coffins like these are very popular in many European countries as well as in the US, just as long as they are used to contain relatively light weight items. The common alternative - pioneered in the Netherlands around twenty years ago - is the powered roof rack, which can carry a variety of ladders, suction hose or LDH loads, and/ or long tools like ceiling hooks etc.
