This description of a New World type body was quite popular for a few years in the 1930s, when these more enclosed configurations were quite popular, and reflected the idea that they looked a bit like contemporary fire pumpers in the USA. The design had the crew seated inside the open body on two longitudinal benches at the rear, accessed from the back. This was actually not a feature of any American open cab pumpers, as crew members were expected to stand on a broad rear step when on their truck.

The rear part of the US pumper’s bodywork was dedicated to the storage of a large load of flaked preconnected hoses, which could be very quickly deployed by the men on the step. This setup was invariably accompanied by a center mounted pump, which - as shown in this photo - was not always a feature of the New World pumper. Because of the standing crew members on the rear step, it was also very rare to see ladders above the hose bed, and they were almost always hung along the sides, as were the suction hoses.

So it was a bit of an improvement for the safety and comfort of the crew - actually a lot better than the traditional US pumper of that day - but not really very much like the trucks which inspired the nickname!
