Nice example of a late thirties enclosed four door pump escape. These came with either mid or rear mounted pumps, and could be specified with full height doors like this, half height doors or even open sides like the three supplied to Newcastle. Powered by a 108 HP six cylinder petrol engine, they had either a 500 or 700 GPM main pump, a 40 gallon tank with a single first aid hose reel, and were designed to accommodate a five person crew. Although many were straight pumps, the design was well suited to the pump escape role, especially with the convenience of the mid mounted pump option.

One of these was my first encounter with a fire engine seventy three years ago in Redcar, which is now in preservation in the Netherlands. Little did the kindly fireman who let me sit in the driver’s seat and then ring the bell know that it would lead to my international career in the truck and fire appliance business and a lasting interest in fire services - which would take me to close to 300 fire stations in more than forty countries over the years, making dozens of great friends on my travels.

A small start for a small child, but a fascination which has still not been dimmed.
