This series was first introduced in 1967, and was the first forward control fire truck chassis series to gain widespread acceptance in Germany. During the years up to the deal with Iveco, Magirus was unique in that it was the only firm in Europe to build its own chassis, engines, pumps, cabs, bodywork as well as its famous turntable ladders, while all others were hybrid combinations of components from different suppliers. This particular model had a front mounted pump, so that the rear compartment could accommodate a PP. The photo shows the rather neat box above the bumper concealing the pump control panel and delivery outlets.

Apart from having an 800 LPM portable pump, the LF16TS had the same specification as the standard LF 16, including the nine seat cab visible in this excellent photo. The PP version was mainly intended as a civil defense pumper, rather like the British Green Goddess, and - like the GG - the PP was mainly included as a water relay pump, as well as a means of accessing open water more easily if hydrants were out of action. Unlike the AFS units, all of the numerous German civil defense pumpers were - and still are - available for volunteer fire companies to use for first response to fires and other emergencies on a daily basis.
