Nice photo, illustrating the articulated upper ladder section. This gives the ladder some of the flexibility of an aerial platform, most importantly to be able to access the reverse side of a pitched roof. A recent video on YouTube shows one of London’s new articulated ladders being deployed at an attic fire - replacing one of the older fixed turntable ladders, which was already on scene but was unable to reach the back side of the roof. It was sent home in disgrace!
