Fire Engines Photos

This is an NFS Heavy Unit pump, with a 700 IGPM pump. As well as a red paint job, it has had a flashing light added, as well as a more shiny bell. These were in use by numerous fire brigades after the NFS was disbanded in 1948. My local brigade in Darlington had one on an Austin chassis until the early 1960s, but in its later years it was limited to reserve duty. The were a lot better than many old prewar units, but did have the disadvantage that they carried no water, so anything needing more than a hand extinguisher meant setting in to a hydrant and using a 2.75 inch hose!

My dad once mentioned seeing a motorcycle fire many years ago being attended by our HU. By the time the crew had set into a hydrant, a local citizen had put the fire out with a garden hose!

Different reg number but otherwise near identical. The film scenario seemed implausible where it came to the use of the fire hoses, HU would more likely have been set in down by a river.
