Is this common in France? I had the impression that most small volunteer fire stations in France were normally part of the SISD.

Not common but legal and working well. Some small "wealthy" village kept their autonomy, not part of the regional SDIS administration but are still operationally linked to the call and dispatching center

Recent regional FD operational boundaries adjustments. (Departement = Local government)
SDIS = Service Departemental Incendie & Secours
STIS = Service Terrirorial Incendie & Secours
SIS = Service Incendie & Secours
SDMIS = Service Departemental & Metropolitain Incendie & Secours

SDIS = 1 Departement
STIS/SIS = Grouping 2 or more Departements
SDMIS = 1 Departement+Large city i.e. SDMIS Lyon

Thanks. Always interesting to see how things are organized. There really are so many different ways of organizing fire protection from country to country, not to mention from town to town here in the States!
