Four axle special purpose container transporters are comparatively rare, and that rear steering axle is an absolute must on a rig which is this long. The tendency to make these units bigger and bigger since they were first introduced on 16 ton two axle chassis in the 1970s has probably gone about as far as it can. Many fire services are now supplementing them by using much smaller 11 or even 5 ton logistics vans, which can be loaded with standard sized wheeled baskets with a wide variety of different equipment or materials, some of which are illustrated on this site.
These are typically more quickly available because they are distributed across a larger number of fire stations, and can respond ahead of a transporter with a dedicated special purpose pod.
The baskets can contain BA, foam, hoses, generators, lighting, ventilation fans, hazmat suits, salvage sheets, flood control gear, monitors, various special rescue equipment or virtually anything else you could think of.
