Not very pretty! The latest trend is to have an extra low window on the crew door, as an added safety measure. Another good - and possibly better - idea on fire trucks here in the US is to give the rear seat riders a rear view mirror, so they can see anything coming behind them, before opening their door. This is also fitted to quite a lot of taxis these days, and can be very helpful.
