This is the exact machine which Nottingham Central firemen told me they hated, because the crew cab step was so short that it was useless, resulting in a big stretch to get in the cab and a big jump when getting out. At the time Central had a pair of these.

I rode that machine from when it was new, later driving it too. I loved it and I do not remember it being hard to climb in and out, even with BA on. That one was a PE, the other a Wrt - ATV 999K.

Terry, it sounds like you might have been younger and/or a bit fitter than the other brothers I talked to. As I remember it was one day in 1975 or 76, but they both looked pretty normal blokes. They did show me the very short step (too small for my size 12s) and I have since noticed that Merryweathers on the same chassis had a very short triangular step for the rear seats too. At the time it was a fairly new unit, so I suppose people gradually got used to the short steps, even if their first reactions were a bit negative.
