I have no specific information about Berlin, but several big city US fire departments report that injuries to firefighters occur in road traffic accidents quite a lot more often than any other kind of job related injuries. Considering how easy it is to be injured in any number of fireground or rescue situations, I personally find this a bit surprising. Fortunately the adoption of custom high strength bumpers and cab structures have helped to reduce the severity of these, along with the more recent universal installation of seatbelts. In some departments, sensors prevent the movement of a vehicle if any occupied seat position’s occupant is not secured by his or her seatbelt.
