Yes, and the number of volunteers is currently decreasing dramatically overall in Europe. Fire Services are doing a lot of advertising campaigns to gain attention!

The same is true here in small towns in the US.

There are two main reasons:

1 - Fewer people are working and living in the same community, so fire services are finding it harder to recruit candidates who are available quickly enough to be able to respond both day and night.

2 - As fire service members are required to be competent in extrication, rescue, EMS first responder and hazmat incidents, as well as firefighting, the training requirements are increasingly onerous and time consuming.

Rob Totally right in France the 2nd reason is prevailing.
