Fire Engines Photos

Presumably from around 1936 to 1938?

Ed: the West Ham FB Big 6s were delivered 1930-1934 so maybe a bit earlier than you say? They changed to Dennis Arrow after that.

The rear seat and BA boxes led me to think it might have been a bit newer…

Southport Fire brigade had a near identical Dennis Big 6 With rear seats delivered in 1939

Ed: this type of seating is called transverse as opposed to Braidwood style ie hanging on for dear life. The fireman son of the chief of West Ham FB called Jones was killed when he fell off a Braidwood.

German open cab pumps evolved from the Braidwood seating style to transverse seating (usually with doors) in the early 1930s - and were mainly fully enclosed by the late thirties. Both of these newer designs included full width bodywork, offering more locker and water tank capacities than the narrower style.

The layout was otherwise fairly similar to other European fire trucks, but they mostly had a longer wheelbase than British pumpers, with more crew seats for eight, ten or sometimes even twelve riders.

Many well preserved examples of these older German classics are on this site.
