This Mercedes 400 series was a more spacious alternative to the 300 series used by Berlin, as illustrated in picture 43629. Both were based on standard van designs, with the highest available power engine and revised suspension to afford a more stable ride. This was before the more expensive trend to custom bodies on chassis cabs, which offered more options for interior layout and additional equipment. In these years there were a few other manufacturers supplying vans for ambulance services in Germany, but Mercedes had a very strong presence.
