These Ivecos have now been replaced by Mercedes and more recently Renault pumpers, but this does illustrate the BSPP’s very useful lightweight 15 meter extension ladder. At around 70 kg, these weigh less than the typical British 13.5 metre example, and are used quite often in the cramped conditions of some of the city’s old apartment buildings with very tight internal courtyards

Quite often they are used in combination with hook ladders, which were invented in Paris early in the 1800s and are still carried on every pump in the city.
