Yorkshire Air Museum Fire Service GMC RIV
During the museums recent Thunder Day, a new addition to the range of fire appliances operated by the enthusiastic volunteer Fire Team made it’s first public debut.
The vehicle in question is a 1989 GMC six-wheeler unit powered by a 6.2litre V8 diesel engine, weighing in at 3.5 tonnes. It is equipped with a Godiver pump with a 900 litre tank capacity and is designed for rapid intervention in a factory or works environment. The GMC was purchased for restoration a few years ago from Intercounty Paramedic Services, who operated the vehicle at the Rolls Royce Derby plant. It has undergone a complete overhaul, with the fitting of a new steering column and is now proudly bearing the Yorkshire Air Museum Fire Service logo.
The GMC joins the V8 Range Rover TACR (Tactical Airfield Crash Response) vehicle and the mighty 38 tonne Reynolds Boughton Pathfinder airport fire tender, which came from Manchester airport and saw service during the horrific aircraft fire of 1985.
These are, however, not ‘toys for the boys’ (and indeed girls - as we have two young ladies amongst the team!) as the team are trained to Civil Aviation Authority Category 2 level, carrying out regular training exercises and examinations during the year. In fact, unique for a museum, it was our Fire Team that assisted County fire services during the flooding disaster in York and Selby in November 2000, using the huge pumping capability of the Pathfinder to save houses in York’s Leeman Road area from what seemed certain disaster. The vehicle was later referred to affectionately by residents as “Thunderbird”! Also, during the fire service strike, the team provided cover for the whole east York area, an impressive endorsement of the teams capability.
It is the presence of the fire team that has enabled to museum to gain our “licence to thrill” and conduct engine runs of our live aircraft on site, as witnessed by many visitors during the recent Thunder Day, which we will repeat next year, in April and August.
