Photo taken at Bressingham Steam Museum 24.7.22. This view of MAH 580 shows some of the framework that was renewed by the previous owners as part of their restoration project in the late 1990s. Sitting on the chassis at the back is part of the carriage of a Merryweather escape which came with MAH. Like the appliance, the ladder had also been dismantled and will be quite a project in itself.

This does illustrate the classic wood framed aluminum paneled structure of this generation of Dennis appliances - and incidentally many other brands in the 50s and 60s. A very labor intensive production method, requiring many highly skilled workers to virtually hand build each unit, and a technology which went back almost half a century.

The biggest problem with these old dears is not surprisingly wood rot, which is often pervasive. When they were on the run in their heyday the biggest problem - when compared to modern units - was that in an accident they came apart very easily. Not to mention that their tyres and brakes back then were not quite up to the job if the driver had a lead foot and gunned the eight cylinder Rolls engine!
