The LF8/8 was a former standard Federal German Republic norm for a light first responder water tender, designed mainly for small volunteer fire companies. A major design feature was that it should have a GVW under 7.5 tons, so that it could be driven by any volunteer with a passenger car driving license. Unlike the LF 8 pumper, which had no water tank but carried a crew of nine, both 38 or 52mm attack hose and 75mm hose, along with ladders and BA sets, the LF 8/8 always had only a two man cab and a 800 liter water tank, and carried much less equipment. Many volunteer fire companies with rural response risks in their response area bought 4X4 units, and the Unimog was famously the best available when it came to off road performance. However, the 8/8 (and the larger 16/18) was not by any means limited to rural firefighting, as it provided a handy first attack water supply for small fires even in urban areas with hydrants.
