Originally developed for general forestry work, this 4X4 chassis had excellent off road capabilities and with a 7 ton GVW had a decent nominal payload of four tons. Powered by a 150 HP Ford turbo engine, it had a very decent performance too for such a light vehicle.
In 1965 Berliet sold the first firefighting units for forest fire incidents, with a single cab, 2,000 litre tank and an independent pump so that it could function while on the move. The design became very popular, and versions with a four door crew cab and an extended 6X6 derivative with increased payload and tank capacity were also introduced in later years. As the Mercedes Unimog started to be marketed in France, the popularity of the Berliet started to decline.
