Mercedes/Carmichael Mercury F389NLC Farnborough
During the International Airshow, photographic restrictions were lifted at the normally secretive MoD Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough. This photo shows a new 1988 Mercedes 1120 Carmichael Mercury pump F389 NLC and was taken in the aircraft dispersal area. The appliance appears to be new, possibly a demonstrator. Most German Ecoliners for the domestic market had factory crew cabs like this, although a longer nine seat version was probably more common. This made the bodybuilder's task a lot easier, as the fire appliance chassis also came with a full torque PTO, beefed up brakes and suspension and a more powerful engine. So there wasn't a ton of engineering involved - just as current Scanias are so popular in the UK for the same reasons.
The downside was cost. At the exchange rates back then, German chassis were expensive. So in the UK Mercedes were comparatively few and far between, and MAN and Magirus chassis were both exceedingly rare. The Ecoliner was however very popular with German fire services in its day.
