The VW is a “Notartz” or paramedic response unit. Although seen here together - which is quite common - these types often respond separately to incidents, depending on the situation. This particular ambulance is equipped for neonatal and pediatric transportation and treatment, while the paramedics unit is not designed for patient transportation, but carries extensive life support equipment for use on site. In Germany, most full time fire services operate EMS, but they are rarely provided by volunteer fire companies.

Other EMS organizations include the Red Cross, St John, Knights of Malta and the equivalent of the British TUC, as well as numerous private and volunteer outfits.
