This split tilt crew cab design looks almost like an original factory design, and is very similar to the large numbers of Volvo pumps supplied to London around the same time. The only obvious disadvantage of this design was the rather limited headroom in the rear. But almost identical cabs were built by several assorted appliance manufacturers - and its popularity with many different fire brigades suggests that this did not deter purchasers. Many newer Volvo appliances nowadays have the factory crew cab - also used extensively by Renault in France - which is also not particularly generous when it comes to headroom.
The trend in most European countries does however seem to be for appliance builders to increasingly construct large, full width crew cabs which are both longer and higher, to accommodate quite a lot of equipment as well as fire crew personnel. The new Volvo rescue pump in picture#42533 is a good example.
