Munich, with 1.55 million citizens, has ten full time staffed fire stations, 13 ambulance stations (some of which are combined with fire stations) and an additional 22 volunteer fire stations - mainly in outlying districts. There are some 1700 operational paid firefighters working a three shift system and just over 900 operational volunteers, including around 100 females. The ten full time fire stations have a total of 281 vehicles, including operational, training, staff and support units and reserves, while the 22 volunteer companies have a further 112 mainly operational units. Last year they dealt with nearly 7,000 fires and some 17,000 other incidents, as well as responding to more than 56,000 EMS calls.

Munich started to deploy rescue pumps 25 years ago and has acquired a total of 58 third generation units like the one in this photo in the last ten years, with a further 33 planned for the next five years. They are on MAN and Mercedes chassis. It is also expected that Munich will soon join those cities trying out the new Rosebauer hybrid electric HLF.
