Kehl has a population of 35, 00 and - as is common in German towns with less than 100,000 citizens - is protected by a volunteer fire service. There are five fire stations, equipped with eleven rescue pumps and pump water tenders, an aerial platform in addition to this ladder, two pod carriers, three special rescue trucks, two hazmat units, various logistics trucks, vans and personnel carriers, three command vehicles and a fire boat.

Because some of the smaller volunteer stations respond to only a few calls, some of their equipment is quite old, including one pumper from 1983.
