These are a new addition to the BSPP roster, to fill the role of the old PS but with a bigger water tank, more firefighting equipment and at the same time dispensing with the stretcher compartment. I am not exactly sure of the specification, but similar units in service with other SDIS have a 1500 LPM pump (at 15 AT), a 1000 liter tank and seats for five crew. Now standard for all BSPP pumpers, I expect these will all have Cameleon CAFS for both class A and B fires. Like the PS, it has a single 23mm high pressure hose reel, two 65mm one man hose carts and carries an extension and (of course) hook ladder. 110mm hose for connection to high output hydrants will be in a locker, along with flaked bundles of 38mm hose for interior attack lines.
The long tradition of having combined PS light pumper and basic life support ambulances in Paris is coming into question, as the EMS call volume is beginning to eat into the availability of these unique vehicles for fire response. Various solutions are being looked at, including replacing some PS with FPTL like this example, while switching others to dedicated ambulance crews.
Old news now, but on April 1 BSPP announced an emergency measure to deploy military staff EMTs to assist in staffing VSAV ambulances in the city. While this may be a temporary measure related to Covid 19, it remains to be seen if it will become more permanent. BSPP was already experiencing very high staff turnover due to extreme levels of workload for ambulance crews and hopefully this step will have improved the situation.
The decision to discontinue purchases of the unique and long-serving combination light pump and ambulance PS units has been finalized. There are numerous photos of these on this site. They will be replaced but separate light pumps, such as the one in this photo, and separate additional ambulances. This gradual transition will help insure that PS units are no longer tied up so often at medical calls and thereby not available to respond to fires and other emergency incidents.
