Breathing apparatus tender at Lancaster Circus station Birmingham. This huge station is now residential, part I think for students at the nearby Aston University. Lucky guys.

A great example of some of the idiosyncratic “custom” bodywork which was not just confined to tiny body builders but quite common among the bigger boys too, building one off specials to meet the sometimes rather quirky desires of some occasionally slightly erratic chief officers. This seems to have been a feature of this era, when budgets were not a concern and workmanship and creativity were prized, sometimes over practicality.

And it was not a British “thing”. Even more individualistic fire equipment cropped up in North America, sometimes including units which exemplified the aphorism that “ a camel is a horse designed by a committee“!
