French fire services use a lot of 18, 22 and 24 meter TTLs, towers and platforms as well as >30 meter units. This preference reflects the fact that many towns and cities have old districts which are not easily accessible to the larger aerials, and contain buildings which are usually only a maximum of three to five floors. Although many pumpers carry a 12 or even 15 meter extension ladder, as well as hook ladders, it is often safer - and sometimes quicker - to use a compact aerial.
Perhaps I should add that - like Colmar (population 70,000) - many medium sized French towns have both a compact aerial as well as a 32 meter appliance.
Big cities have many more, with 63 operated by BSPP in Paris.
