These units are quite common among German fire services, and are designed primarily to clean up oil and chemical spills.

Forklifts , road sweepers , cranes - never cease to be amazed by how much kit these guys have!

Craig: Germany was an early adopter of diesel engines -and diesel fuel leaks and spills are a lot more difficult to clean up than petrol, which evaporates very quickly. It also has a lot of chemical plants and quite a high volume of road and rail tanker traffic with hazmat loads. This environmental role was given to the fire service many years ago, as they already had the human resources and rapid response capability to be on scene quickly when needed...

Craig: Just for fun, I counted the number of different categories of equipment operated by the Hamburg brigade. Including all the 705 fire, rescue, EMS, support, command and staff vehicles, pods and trailers the service has 54 different classifications!
