Hamburg Fire Service EMS Division responded to 231, 000 incidents last year, with a fleet of 157 vehicles including this impressive unit based on a Mercedes bus.

The fire and rescue divisions had 496 vehicles, 45 pods, 64 trailers and 52 water craft including three fireboats. These include volunteer fire companies' units, training, reserve, support, staff, administrative and command vehicles.

I should mention that Hamburg has 34 full time EMS stations as well as 23 combined fire and EMS stations. The 86 volunteer fire companies are not equipped for EMS interventions. This comprehensive EMS coverage is unusual, because in most large German cities the fire service is only one of a number of EMS agencies, while in Hamburg it is the sole provider.

I recently learned that one volunteer fire company is the exception and operates the only volunteer ambulance in the city fire service fleet.
