This is the equivalent to the French GRIMP unit - a specialized rescue vehicle for high angle rope rescue incidents. They are fairly common in both France and Germany but not often found in other countries. Not entirely sure, but it looks like a 4X4, which would be typical for this kind of application.
I checked the Dresden Feuerwehr website and got confirmation that this is indeed a 4X4. It is a Sprinter 319 factory chassis crew cab, which actually had the rescue body transferred from an older chassis. Like other similarly sized German cites, Dresden has a very large fleet of appliances, including numerous specials, pod transporters and special purpose pods.
The 21 volunteer fire stations vary considerably when it comes to how many appliances they operate and the numbers of times the turn out, and some of the less busy ones still run a few units dating back to the 1990s! One newer truck is an interesting Atego 18 meter "quint" with a 2000 LPM pump and 1800 liter tank - similar to units operated in Turkey and illustrated on this site. It seems like a handy unit, especially compared to the ill-fated Magirus Multistars, which have not found much favor with German volunteer fire companies.
