The New Order Volvo/EOne West Sussex

My first sight of the new order in West Sussex. One of an order of seven Volvo FL/Emergency One 12 tonne Medium Rescue Pumps, GU20 YGU is destined to be the first away at Haywards Heath, but seen on September 5th 2020 parked up in the drill yard at Arundel fire station alongside EFADs driver training Scania P94d/260/JDC WTL HX06 UWY. West Sussex is replacing its current fleet with a mix of these 12 tonne Medium Rescue Pumps and 18 tonne Special Rescue Pumps, an improved version of the current Scania fleet. The Medium Rescue Pumps only have one hose reel, an 80m Ultra High Pressure Hose reel, no 135 Ladder, but 9 meter and 6 meter triple extension ladders, plus roof ladder. Crews are currently undergoing training on the new machines and I am reliably informed the other 6 will be allocated to East Grinstead, Crawley 2nd, Worthing 2nd, Worthing 3rd (retained crew), Henfield (retained) & the training centre.

UHP technology takes the old high pressure first aid hose reel concept to a new level. Taking the Rosenbauer systems as a typical example, the four stage NH pump series delivers up to 400 LPM to up to two reels at 40 AT. Based on the idea that much higher pressures produce far greater atomization of the water droplets - and thereby much enhanced cooling - the UHP operates at 100 AT, requiring only 38 LPM through a single hose reel. The resulting stream is claimed to be effective on liquid fires and vegetation fires, as well as creating less water damage in small interior structure fires. It can, if desired, be combined with a foam system too.

Although - as in this example - it usually replaces a standard high pressure system, there is no reason why both could not be combined on one appliance if needed. The UHP system is very often fitted to ATV and small brush trucks in Europe, as a 200 to 500 litre tank provides a great deal of extinguishing capacity at these elevated pressures.

UHP systems are increasingly popular in the US too for brush trucks with limited water tank capacity, such as those built out on pickup truck chassis which can rarely carry much more than 700 litres or so. They have not seen much interest for installation on engines for structural fire fighting though. This is probably because they all have tanks over 1820 liters, and the system’s water usage and extinguishing times are no better than a standard CAF line, which can always be increased if necessary to around 455 LPM water and 1800 LPM foam at the flick of a wrist if using a 45mm line.
