This current trend is perhaps exemplified by the different types of FRU used by the London Fire Brigade. Although they look the same, and carry a standard set of equipment, each one has an additional specialist role. For example, nine of the fourteen are equipped for rope rescues, others are prepared for hazmat incidents, or water rescue and other special situations.

London also have USAR pods of course, and the specialized pod solution has been developed to a fine art in Germany especially. Large fire services in major cities deploy numerous different types of specialized rescue pods, hazmat and decon pods, as well as firefighting, flood control and tactical support pods. These are also to be found all over the country - organized on a regional basis - in smaller towns, often manned by specially trained volunteers.

Ed: LFB are about to replace their FRUs as they do not comply with low emission zone for air pollution.

In the 1980s a fashion started to produce new names for appliances especially specials. The problem was when the same name was used for different things in different brigades.

Andy: Are the rural tankers 4X4 or 6X6, or is it just a question of how much countryside is in their station's response area?
