Storrington turn out

West Sussex retained crewed station 50 Storrington, just before 4pm on Friday June 26th 2020 as 2006 Scania P270/CP31/JDC WTL HX06 GZA (50P1) turns out with a crew of 5 to a small house fire about half a mile north of the station. Worthings 2nd pump HX06 GMO also mobilised to the call. Remaining in the station is 50M1 Mercedes Sprinter/Bence 4 x 4 HX64 LDE and one firefighter. Good to report a change of policy is seeing station names being reapplied to appliances after this practiced ceased in 2014, HX64 LDE now sporting a station name in white stickers, HX06 GZA having retained its original removable station name plates.

Total luck - just happened to be driving past as the bay doors opened, so parked round the corner and a quick jog back resulted in the photo. Jon

Hi Jon: Do you happen to know what the Sprinter is used for and/or how it is kitted out?

The 6X6 is apparently stationed at Midhurst. This Storrington Sprinter is the 4X4, with a 400 liter rather than a 1200 liter tank.

Both have a self contained CAFS installation with a discharge rate up to 120 LPM, and a crew cab. The 4X4 also carries water rescue equipment - while the 6X6 has an open rear body, which can accommodate a variety of loads for different incidents...

The brigade also already operates Mercedes G Wagen and Unimog appliances, but the Sprinters are a much less expensive alternative.

The 4X4 and 6X6 Sprinters are not really off road trucks to the same extent as the G Wagen or Unimogs, both of which are really military designs, but they are unquestionably a bit more capable than regular Sprinter vans...

Well Rob has already answered the question, although probably worth adding the following which is my understanding based on conversations from various West Sussex firefighters. The Storrinton 4 X 4 has a quantity of Enviroment Agency equipment for dealing with spills etc. They were initially aimed at being a sort of multi role machine to replace both the 4 X 4 Super G/ Land Rover appliances and the 2nd pump at Storrington & Midhurst, with a selection of equipment useful across the brigade area, which included trialing battery operated RTC equipment. The Midhurst 6 X 6 also had a more specific off road /wildfire/flood rescue role, compared to the Storrington one, hence the different design. When new the Midhurst 6 X 6 was mobilised to a fire in Hurspierpoint due to its Ultra high pressure hose reel. The rest of brigades Super Gs L4Ts are due for replacement by Ford Rangers I understand.

Thanks. Always interesting to see how brigades are updating their equipment to deal with a variety of often quite different risk situations. We will see how this evolves, but swap body 6X6 Sprinters have already found favor in quite a few Swiss and Austrian fire services too, as they are relatively cheap, versatile in terms of different types of slide-in or lift-on equipment packages, and do fairly well off road and/or in snow...
