This was at the Teesside Airport fire engine rally in either 1982 or '83 held at the airport. At the time I was part owner of the vehicle we only took PGW 502 to the rally in '82, '83 and '84.The last time we took PGW 502 in '84 it had been completely resprayed and had the Fire Services Association badge applied under the front side windows; we won the best Bedford category that year. We only ever attended the Teesside Airport Fire Engine rally because our vehicle was used to cover flying club activities at weekends at Carlisle Airport and we had to arrange alternative fire cover when we were displaying it. We were trained to CAA category 1 and 2 aerodrome fire and rescue standards for our normal weekend duties, but it was nice to have the chance to show it off.

Brian - Did you have to make any modifications to cover flying club activities, or was it all to the original AFS specifications?

PGW 502 was bought for Carlisle Airport by Carlisle city council which owned the airport in those days it was purchased from L W VASS and was modified with a round the pump proportioner and a 30 gallon foam tank - the latter was fitted where the ladder wheels of the original ladder used to hang down above the pump.We purchased it from the council when it was retired, in council service it was bought as reserve to the main appliance, the Bedford HCB Firestreak.

Thanks Brian

I thought it may have been modified because the original GG specification did not have any foam capability

BTW I think those wheels were to help move the portable pump around, as it was rather heavy to be carried

Crash2 has now been bought by The Solway Aviation Museum and will be returning home August 2023.

I went out to see it at Carlisle Airport yesterday unfortunately I do not think it would win any awards at the moment, but nice to see it again.
