Iveco Daily 50C17/AES DIM unit London FB MX09PJO20th November 2017 on a gloomy afternoon, Sebert Road, Forest Gate, East London. DIM unit Lambeth; FRUs from Euston (rear of photo)and Lewisham, (neither local)and Command Unit plus two Mark 3 Atego pumps attend a chemical incident in a domestic property Cranmer Rd E7.
DIM units were funded by UK government; they are unmarked with brigade logos and white not red. They identify unknown chemicals and help with London resilience and national CBRN capabilities. Not always easy to photograph because of security links to their use in these times of various threats.
Vehicles fitted out for government by AES(autoelec); this company was acquired by AssetCo and failed with them a few years ago. See
picture 32944 for another example. Equipment provided for each team includes an infrared spectroscope, radiation survey meters, gas detectors and instruments for chemical vapour and isotope identification. Communication systems, satellite telephones and data transfer equipment are also carried. Gas-tight suits and breathing apparatus, together with a decontamination structure. The DIM team will be able to detect and analyse a range of chemicals found in different states - gases and vapours, solids including powders, liquids, radiological materials and biological hazards. The concentration of gases in the air can be assessed and operational and environmental hazards can be monitored. (info Roger Mardon)
