An elderly LF8. Note the former driveshaft opening under the grille for the previously installed front mounted 800 LPM pump. These were almost universal among small town German volunteer fire departments. A practical and inexpensive way of providing fire cover in a country where every small town or village has its own fire station.

Just to help quantify how popular these were in their day, Germany does actually have over 22, 300 volunteer fire companies (as well as 99 full time departments), so these LF8s were produced in really large numbers.

With some of these only attending seven or eight alarms a year, there were a lot of low mileage examples available when they were eventually replaced, some after as long as forty years!

Lohr has a population of 16, 000 people, has 280 volunteers including social members and youth fire service members and operates eleven fire and rescue units. These include three rescue trucks, an aerial ladder tower, a brush truck, a tanker, a personnel carrier and three pump water tenders.

So far this year they have dealt with seventeen fires.
