Rosenbauer Concept Fire Truck

Rosenbauer of Austria presented this concept truck on their 150th annniversary gala.
Electric drive and the fire fighters needs in mind.
Maybe a truck seen in our streets in the future or at least some ideas that went into it will become reality.

Battery power or something more advanced?

Batteries AFAIK and some backup generator for recharging them when long operating.

Prototypes are now in service in a few large German cities, undergoing field evaluation. The Berlin unit, Christened eLHF, was placed in service in September 2020. The battery electrical system is claimed to provide a range of up to 180 miles and 60 to 90 minutes of pump operation, with a diesel generator adding a further operational period of around four hours without exhausting its 130 litre fuel tank.

The specification is otherwise identical to the city's newest MAN diesel LHF20/12 appliances It includes a 2000 LPM pump, a 800/2400 CAFS installation, a 12 meter ladder, four scaling ladders, 1200 litre water tank, 100 litre class A foam solution tank, full rescue pump equipment, a seven seat cab and two 75mm one man hose carts. In common with all of the city's recent rescue pump acquisitions, the high pressure hose reel has been deleted and is replaced by a 52mm diameter pre-connected hose with 400/1200 LPM nozzle.

Additional design features include AWD, four wheel steering and adjustable ground clearance between 175 and 350 cm. Although the Berlin unit has a 2000 LPM pump and 1200 litre tank, the design accommodates a NH35 dual pressure 3500 LPM pump and a 2000 litre water tank plus 200 litres of A and/or B class foam, if required. Units have also been introduced in Amsterdam, Hamburg and Dubai, and aerials are being finished for Karlsruhe and (low profile) for Dresden.

Berlin's first battery electric pump appliance was delivered in 1901! It was front wheel drive, with electric wheel motors, and carried a petrol fueled steam pump, a crew of seven and a modest amount of hose. Additional hose, more personnel and ladders - plus other gear - were carried on a separate accompanying tender. At the same time Paris was also acquiring numerous battery electric pumps, ladder trucks and squads, but these all gave way to petrol power within the following twelve years...

Geneva has been added to the list of buyers for the new Rosenbauer pump, with an order for four units.

LAFD E 82 is a new Rosenbauer prototype hybrid triple combination engine, which is - I think - probably the first one in the US.

It has the four wheel steering option, standard four wheel drive and four ground clearance settings - due to its electronically controlled air suspension. These are low for cab entry/exit and unloading, mid level for street driving, high for off road and ultra-high for fording streams and operating in flooded conditions.

It has two hours of battery life for driving and/or pumping, with pump-and-roll capability combined with a remote control roof monitor.

A BMW diesel engine provides four hours of additional operation at full output, after which can then be refueled conventionally.

The pump is a Rosenbauer NH55, rated at 5500 LPM at 10AT. This is the same volume as most high capacity US hydrants and the same capacity as other LAFD engines.

Unusually for a US rig, it also has a four stage high pressure circuit, and a high pressure hose reel. More conventionally, it has roof beds for both 100 125 mm flaked hose, and three crosslays for quick deployment of attack lines immediately behind the cab. A Rosenbauer walkaround introductory video is on Youtube.

The chassis is now being delivered in three different wheelbases, with either a four to six seat or seven to nine seat cab, 1000 to 4000 liter tank, a 2500, 3500, 4500 or 5500 LPM normal or combined dual pressure pump with or without class A and/or B CAFS and with optional front, side and rear deliveries as well as an optional remote control roof monitor

Roof accommodations also include soft and hard suctions and a variety of ground ladders, and the unit has been engineered to be entirely compatible with existing conventional pumper and rescue pumper designs and configurations in almost every country.

So far deliveries include Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and Dubai as well as the USA.

The longest wheelbase is intended for aerials, including units equipped with built in pumps and tanks.
