1976 Cynwyd North Wales. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of me taking the best range of photos I ever managed, just in the space of 2 days.

Note the flaked hose ready to go.

(to see the attendance at this huge mountain fire during the long drought in that summer put CYNWYD in the search engine, a wonderful diversity of appliances long gone from several brigades.)

Looks like a single 50 foot (15 meter) length, which would seem to be a bit limited. Here in the US, most preconnected crosslays are usually 200 to 250 feet, and rarely less than 100. Still a bit unusual to see one at all on a British pumper.

It will be a standard 75' length, quite common in the 70s and 80s often a plastic bread tray was used.

In the UK we usually just refer to them as pumps - not pumpers.

Neal:

It still seems a good idea to get a 45 MM line on a fire very quickly in cases where a hosereel may not be a sufficient solution.

You mention that this kind of preconnect was once quite a common idea but has since died out. I wonder why?

These preconnects are so popular here in the US that some pumpers have several for both attack and supply.

I have seen pumpers with front, rear and both side 125 MM 30 or 60 meter preconnects for hydrant supply, a 25 MM 30 meter "trash line" for nuisance fires in the front bumper, two 75 meter 45s for interior attack on the crosslay above the pump and both a 70 and a 75 in the rear bed with 90 meters each for exterior work - as well as regular longer hose lays in the bed for more distant work.
