One of several hundred ex US Army 2.5 ton 6X6 trucks left behind in Western Europe after WWII. Many were converted to tankers for brush firefighting, like this example, and placed into service in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
French rural fire services operated hundreds of these conversions, many of them completing more than forty years' service before being replaced. They normally included a 3, 000 tank and a 500 LPM portable pump, pre-piped to a single first aid hose reel.
As the conversions were usually carried out by small local firms, there were numerous variations. These included many with the standard truck cab - like this one - some with open cabs, some with full crew cabs, round, elliptical or rectangular tanks, pretty much any configuration you could imagine!
Anyone who wants to look at an amazing selection of photos of these ex US army GMC fire truck conversions could do worse than taking a look at a website which goes by the name "historic fire engines Europe".
If you speak French, the netpompiers.fr site also has loads of them, too...
