The photo is of a Civil Defence exercise and has the following caption (the fireman in the back seems keen to get out):
The primary objective of the exercise C.D.R. (Fire) is to stimulate recruitment into the Civil Defence service general. At the same time it is planned with a view to incorporate so far as possible, the use of all personnel so far recruited to work in the capacity in which they are serving.
On 7th April 1951 at 15:00 hours an Air Raid Warning was received following the sighting of a Squadron of enemy planes flying from the South at a low altitude.
Almost simultaneously with the operation of the siren, one of the enemy planes crash landed onto the Fisher Street Car Park, either as a result of fighter interception or engine trouble.
Upon impact the plane caught fire and lighted petrol flowed into low lying areas and also basement premises rear of Castle Street. Some of the persons occupying the upper floors of the buildings involved were seen to be trapped, the spread of fire having cut off the stairway as a means of escape.
Prior to crashing, the undercarriage of the plane struck and demolished a building nearby and buried two of the occupants beneath the debris.
