Simon Snorkel Dudley 049 FD

A Bedford TK/Simon Snorkel on trade plate 049 FD and a Bedford Green Goddess (NYV 193) behind, probably being trialed by the manufacturer. The Green Goddess was allocated to the County Borough of Dudley and Simon's Works were also at Dudley. The location is believed to be by the Dudley Canal and adjacent to what is now the Black Country Museum. The bridge behind carries the A4123 Birmingham New Road. The Simon Snorkel has red flashing lights, not blue ones, suggesting is is a demonstrator or for export.

Hi, the location is definitely not A4123 Birmingham New Road. It is St. Peter's Road, Darby End. Dudley No.2 Canal. Fox & Goose Bridge. St.Peter's church (seen on top left of picture) still stands today.

David. Thanks for highlighting that the location was incorrect. You've obviously got the local knowledge there. As with the TL photo, I've checked on Google maps streetview and the location hasn't changed a great deal in some 50 years, apart from the trees of the off side of the canal by the bridge being a bit thicker. Now I just need to find out a bit more about what was happening.

It also looks to be a Transportable Water Unit(Bikini) in the background possibly on the rarer S type Bedford Chassis?

Hadn't noticed that before but certainly Dudley operated a Bikini Unit - see pic 38608. The raft was used on the canals and flooded caverns around the town.

The fact that the TK is left hand drive may be another clue as to its ultimate destination...

How can you tell that Rob? I thought the give away might be the sweep of the wipers (as the steering wheel can't be seen) but the wipers as fitted in the same orientation as rhd models.

It is. There are 239 Bedford TK fire appliances photos on this site, and most of them are right hand drive. Look more closely...

The vertical axis on the driver's side is always right next to the same side A pillar.
