Dodge Kew WrT ex Essex 303DNO

1970s photo by Norman Tarling. This is the first Dodge Kew to appear on this site, a rare type favoured by Essex who had them both in this red configuration, and with aluminium sides later e.g. 757-763JNO. 763 turned over and ended up on its roof. The early Essex Kews had a immediate post war heavy pump appearance with open rear deck. Circuses often has ex local authority appliances.

Brecon and Radnor Joint Fire Brigade had two of these based in Rhayader and Llandrindod Wells- apparently there exists a photo of them both outside the "new" Llandrindod Fire Station in the 1950s but where I wonder?

The amazing thing about these is the extreme height of the first aid hose reels. The Commer Whitsons of this vintage had a similar installation, but with the addition of an extra step and a vertical grab handle. Did these have to be accessed by climbing on the back of the appliance, or did Essex simply insist on hiring very tall recruits?
