LFB Metz TL

London Fire Brigade 1937 Leyland Metz TL DGJ309,(I think), seen parked up in H38 Sutton Fire Station in about 1995. The LFB had a Divisional reorganisation in the mid 1990's resulting in some station's being renumbered.

Chris, you are correct, it is Sutton Fire Station. The Leyland Metz TLP DGJ309 was stabled at Sutton for a number of years in the 1980s 90s. When it 1st arrived at Sutton the station code was K28. The firefighters at Sutton were always very supportive of the old girl and they showed me great kindness and support whenever I visited.
It was parked at Sutton with kind permission of the Chief Officer and local Commanders of London Fire Brigade.
The vehicle currently with me in Hampshire and it is still on the road.

Do we know how many of these Leyland Metz TLPs London had? I know they also had some Morris Magirus ladders on Dennis chassis, but did they also buy Merryweathers in the 1930s?

Hi Mike, Don't know if you remember me but I was with you at the Royal Military Tattoo in 2000. I crewed Frank's Heavy Unit. Though I remember going to the petrol station with you on the TL, and we had to go through a set of lights on the bell and all the traffic stopped! Glad you still ok. Chris

Rob, LFB had 4 Leyland Metz TLPs, 2 in 1937 (DGJ309 & DGJ310) and 2 in 1939 (FGU691 & FGU692). All were withdrawn from service in April 1964. They purchased 1 Dennis Merryweather TLP in 1938 (ELL123), 7 TLs in 1940 (GGK941, 943 to 948) plus 1 TL in 1941 (GGK949). The Wartime TLs did not have fire pumps when new but had independant pumps fitted in NFS days.
Hope this answers your query.

Hello Rob, I sent a reply a few days ago but it seems lost. Here is the reply again.

LCC London Fire Brigade had 4 Leyland Metz TLPs, DGJ309, DGJ310 both 1937, and FGU691, FGU692 of 1939. All were withdrawn en bloc in 1964. The GLC LFB took over AVB1 of 1936, from Croydon FB in 1965 and it remained until 1968.

The only Merryweather TLP on a Dennis chassis was purchased by the LCC was ELL123 in 1938. There were others purchased in 1940/1941, GGK941, GGK943 TO GGK948 in 1940 and GGK949 in 1941. When delivered they were straight TLs, independant pumps were subsequently fitted, I believe in National Fire Service days.
LCC LFB had quite a number of Dennis Morris Magirus TLs, some earlier ones with 85' wood ladders.
Hope this helps
