Hi Tony,

I notice on the photo the reference to three of the engines having sirens, the fourth two-tone horns. Do you know who supplied the sirens? The one visible doesn't look like the usual Francis air sirens used by my city Brigade (and many others in the Midlands and North) of Leeds. I used to love hearing them wailing as a youngster! The local County Brigade, like many, never used them.

Was it just fashion to change to two-tone horns from the early seventies?

Kind Regards,

Steve.

Steve, yes, the new Dennis's were originally fitted with Carter sirens as previous appliances but the new model siren did not reach the same crescendo as the old ones so just seemed to moan rather than scream, if you know what I mean. Thus, we went over to two-tones.

thanks for that info Tony.

Incidentally, I have just remembered that Edinburgh had engines with air sirens in use in 1990. Virtually everyone surely had electric sirens or two-tones by then?

Thanks Tony Madsen I finally found a photograph of myself in the back row Fireman Guilliatt. Now retired although in still good health must be the good air from Monument Road.
