Chris:

I always thought the XL cab was so that some of the handful of overseas fire services who did buy a Dennis could accommodate seven or eight crew members.

Why would a UK brigade like Kent buy an XL, when none of them ever intended to run with more than six, and turned out most of the time with four or five?

Extra space doesn't need to be justified in my opinion. It not only makes the cab more spacious but more flexible too. Many brigades that operate the larger cabs on both Sabres and Scanias make use of the extra space by storing kit.

Yelp:

Of course its up to them.

And a lot of fire departments here also specify eight seat cabs and use the space in three or even four seat locations for items of equipment. All of our Chicago engines and aerials have a six seat cab and use one position for EMS or other items.

But it isn't really extra space, as these XL cabs don't really add anything: the midships locker has to be smaller - unless you extend the wheelbase, which adds extra space anyway....

In my suspicious mind, I wondered if Dennis had perhaps over-ordered XL cabs from their supplier when they were having so many contractual disputes with them. Perhaps they were hoping to sell a few additional units to Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czechs or maybe even Germany, which only bought two!

Having been in the truck industry for many years, I know every manufacturer has to try to flog what they have got from time to time, instead of building exactly what the customer wants...

Interesting insight into truck manufacturers' sales slightly underhand tactics, Rob! Having worked in sales myself I know how underhand the "profession" can be! But, having thought about it, personally I like to think the extra room is there so exhausted firefighters have somewhere to put their feet up during the drive back to the station for a well deserved hot shower and a cup of sweet strong tea. No more technicals please, anyone, cos that's what it's for! Not listening....
