Bolton Quickstep

This "sidewinder style" hand-pumped fire engine, known as the "Bolton Quickstep", was built in 1820 and used in the town of Bolton, Massachusetts. It is the New York City Fire Museum's oldest exhibition piece, and is unique for its method of operation. Four firemen, one at opposite ends of each pole, alternately push and pull the poles towards and away from them, much like on a rowing machine. This action drives water from the tank into the plungers and out through a hose onto the fire.
