1927 Dennis 250 gallon

I was just looking at the wonderful picture of Guy Ellis's little Dennis (picture 36882) and it did cross my mind that perhaps a little 'Artistic License' had been used! For the delivery hose was flat and there was no water overflow from the radiator to show that it was pumping hard. (On all the early Dennis's there is a water bleed off from the pump fed directly into the engine cooling system). In this picture of my similar Dennis you can see the steady stream of excess water coming out of the radiator (Between the 3 and the 1 of the number plate) and a delivery hose under pressure.

That's very nice Barry, thank you but EUP313 was a Dennis Light 4 New World fire engine. What have you done to it? Its a bit more than "artistic licence"! Merry Christmas.

Lovely picture, Barry. On my Leyland there is a stop cock to turn off Radiator circulation from the pump if required. Do they not have one on Dennis machines?

Richard, the Dennis has a tap too. Normally I set it so that the overflow water is nicely hot so that the engine is running at a comfortable temperature. When I looked again at Guy Ellis's recent photograph of his Dennis I see that his delivery hose IS pressurised so I think I can safely say I was totally wrong!

However, I know that with my Dennis you really need the water flow turned on right from the start of pumping as the engine heats up quite quickly when under load.

I can see why you thought the my Dennis was not pumping, at first glance it does look like the hose is flat, but if you look closer you see that it is twin lines.I found it not necessary to turn the Radiator circulation on as it seems to cope with the heat well. It was a hot day in the Australian summer about 32c..It is a overhead valve model, so may run cooler?? maybe.lol
