When I lived in digs right next door to the new Cambridge City Fire Station for a term in 1964, I remember the F8 stationed there at the time did not have these rear wheel spats. It did have lockers above the rear wheel arches - and it also carried a Merryweather 45 foot ladder, as well as several shorter ones. One of the watch members told me this ladder was for use in some of the older college courtyards, where they could not gain access with a wheeled escape ladder.

It seems the F8 in the photo was either modified or more probably moved around between stations.

The City station only had a single F8 at the time. The others were an F12 PE, A Dennis Metz TL an elderly short wheelbase Bedford pump. a unique R type 4X4 ET (pictured on this site)and an R type Bedford 4X4 water carrier.

I have now read in one of Eddie Baker's books that this appliance was a cancelled export order. You can see a recent posting from Dr. Barry at picture 38281 = it survives just about at Weedon.
