Bomberos Avellaneda - Argentina

The volunteer Fire Department of Avellaneda is one of the oldest Volunteer Fire Departments in Argentina. It was established in 1897. The first motorized vehicle was this 1921 Renault. Today is preserved its central fire station. Photo taken in November 1997.

This REnault has very distinctive lines - shared only with Mack at the time. Renault placed the radiator behind the engine on these trucks as well as their early passenger cars. It made for a very streamlined look, but was perhaps not the ideal engine cooling arrangement, as they later changed it.

This looks very original, but it may have had solid tyres back in 1921, as pneumatics were still rather uncommon on fire trucks. The problem of punctures caused by cast-off horseshoe nails was still a concern for many fire departments back then!

This 90 year old engine is in perfect condition, and congratulations are due to the team who preserved and restored it.
