1987 Mack CS ROLL-OFF CAVE-IN unit

Originally bought by the Rockville VFD in Montgomery Co.,Maryland in 1988, this rig originally had a single rear axle, but later was changed to a tandem rear to carry greater weight.
Most often carried the cave-in module as shown, IIRC, there was also another module set up for water supply. Now off the RVFD roster, I believe this is still used by the county's Urban Search and Rescue team.

Great picture, Warren! This is the ONLY photo I have ever seen of an American fire service roll-on/roll-of pod container system and transporter, and I have never seen one in the metal. Of course, it just HAD to be a Mack!

These systems are certainly still a pretty rare sight here, while they are to be found everywhere in many European fire services.

Thank you, I should say that fire apparatus on the Mack CS chassis are just as rare.
Rockville is credited with the 1st pod system in the US, but nearby Fairfax Co., VA. , whose chief at the time was x-Montgomery Co FRS. and a member of Rockville VFD, would soon place a 1989 International Paystar tandem axle tranporter with an Excellance field command pod in service . I believe there was also communications equipment and haz-mat pods with this unit, which I believe is still in service.
Neighboring Prince Georges County, Md. would buy a Freightliner FLD120 tandem axle transporter with collapse pod in 1996, this is now known as Collapse Response 806.
Interestingly, an article I researched for this post referred to the West Midlands Fire Brigade in the UK and their POD system on a Dennis chassis as an inspiration for Rockville's unit...
My next post will show another smaller POD system used by VFDs in PA and VA.
